​GLL Unsung Heroes Series

This series is about people who have done great things to help society, but their stories are not well known. These people are called "unsung heroes." We want to share their stories with you to inspire and encourage you. By learning about these unsung heroes, you can see how one person can make a big difference in the world.

​Fannie Lou Hamer was a brave woman who fought for civil rights and faced many challenges with great courage. Her story shows the power of standing up for what is right, even when it is difficult, and it can inspire us to never give up on our own beliefs.

E02 Tabei

Junko Tabei, born in 1939 in Fukushima, became the first woman to climb Mount Everest in 1975. Despite people telling her that women shouldn’t climb, she followed her passion and created a group for women climbers. Her success on Everest showed that women can achieve great things. Junko also worked to protect the environment, cleaning up mountains in her later years. Her story inspires us to follow our dreams, no matter the obstacles.

Maria da Penha is a Brazilian woman whose fight for justice after surviving domestic violence led to the creation of Brazil's strong domestic violence law, the Maria da Penha Law. Her courage in speaking out has protected many women and continues to inspire the fight against domestic violence.

Naoko Takahashi was a Japanese marathon runner who made history by winning the gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Her victory inspired many in Japan and showed the world the strength and determination of female athletes. Naoko’s success continues to motivate future generations of runners.
